Alzheimer’s d isease (AD) is an irreversible\, progressive neurological disorder that sl owly destroys memory and thinking skills\, and eventually the ability to c arry out the simplest tasks. AD affects people in all parts of the world\, with age being the biggest risk factor. The incidence of AD is one in ten over the age of 65\, one in two by age 90.
\nCenna Biosciences is a biopharmaceutical company d edicated to the discovery and development of novel drugs to prevent and tr eat Alzheimer’s disease. There is close to twenty years of academic resear ch at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) into this disease-m odifying drug. Their target is A-Beta\, which is the primary toxic insult in Alzheimer’s disease. It is now generally regarded as the first thing th at goes wrong. Cenna is able to inhibit the production of A-Beta using a n ovel technology that addresses some of the problems encountered with previ ous attempts by others.J oin us as we explore the new discoveries on this important topic.
\nDr. Nazneen Dewji is the President and CEO of Cenna Biosciences Inc. and of Cura Therapeutics LLC\, in La Jolla\, CA and an Associate Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of Calif ornia\, San Diego. Nazneen was born in Tanzania and raised in England.? Sh e was educated at the University of London\, where she earned her B.Sc. (H ons.) in Biochemistry and Ph.D. in Protein Chemistry and Enzymology. In 19 86 she accepted a faculty position in the department of Medicine at UCSD. Since then she has worked on the molecular and cellular mechanisms in Alzh eimer’s disease (AD). The discoveries made in her laboratory at UCSD suppo rt the development of new disease-modifying drug candidates for the treatm ent of AD. These are currently being developed at Cenna Biosciences Inc\, a start-up company that she\, along with her late colleague Dr. S. J. Sing er\, founded in 2006 and at Cura Therapeutics LLC that Nazneen founded in 2017.? Cenna’s and Cura’s proprietary technologies address the underlying cause of the disease\, the inappropriate deposition of the toxic species\, ?-amyloid (A?)\, in the brains of patients with AD. The Companies have de veloped novel targets and are developing several lead peptide and small mo lecule compounds as disease-modifying drug candidates for the treatment of AD. The work so far has been funded by non-diluting NIH and other grants. The Intellectual Property that forms the basis of Cenna’s and Cura’s appr oaches is covered by U.S. and foreign Patents.

The San Diego beer scene is one of the best known in the country\, with over 150 breweries pouring over $1 billion into the local economy. So me trace it’s origins after homebrewing was legalized in 1978\, and Califo rnia allowed brewpubs to operate as early as 1982. Then in 1989\, Karl Str auss opened it’s Brewery & Grill\, creating the catalyst for San Diego’s c raft beer rise. From Karl Strauss\, you can trace the San Diego beer scene \, with several of it’s the original employees opening well-known brewerie s\, including Pizza Port Brewery (which spawned Port Brewing and Lost Abbe y\, among others) and the Home Brew Mart\, which gave rise to Ballast Poin t Brewing Company. January 15\, 2020
\n5:30 – 8:30 pm
\n@Knobbe Martens (12790 El Camino Real\,
San Diego\, CA 92130)
Panel Discussion
\nWho should attend?
\nThis session is for chief technologist
s\, R&D\, product managers\, developers\, and designers who want to better
understand the principles of Privacy by Design.
Cal ifornia has two new laws that go into effect January 1: the California Con sumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and SB 327\, an IOT security law which mandates t hat manufacturers that sell or offer to sell a connected device in Califor nia equip the device with “reasonable security features.”
\nThis mak es California the first state to specifically regulate the security of con nective devices\, which are commonly referred to as Internet of Things (Io T) devices and the CCPA is one of most comprehensive state privacy laws to go into effect since the EU enacted General Data Protection Regulation (G DPR) in 2018.
\nIn contrast to California data privacy laws protecti ng only personal information\, the new security law aims to protect the se curity of both IoT devices\, and any information contained on IoT devices.
\nGiven this focus on legislating privacy and security we should be thinking ahead and addressing these principles during the design process. While SB 327 focuses on IoT specifically (this includes connected things such as connected cars\, industrial devices\, retail point-of-sale or medi cal devices\, to name a few)\, privacy can impact other products and apps as well\, including social apps\, media\, and telecommunications.? Across the board\, these two new acts have an impact on a wide number of products and services.
\nExamples where Privacy by Design was needed
\nWhen we look at the Facebook data privacy scandal around the collection and sharing of personally identifiable information on as m any as 87 million people or read in recent news about hackers who have bee n able to spy on children via popular “smart home” security apps\, we real ize that even honestly designed products can end up with unintended conseq uences.? As our world becomes more mobile and more connected\, how can dev elopers build privacy and security into their products to keep their custo mers safe and secure?
\nPanel Focus
\nThis pa nel will consist of technical\, product\, and design professionals who wil l focus on how we can apply design principles that will make our new produ cts safe and secure.
\nWhat is Privacy by Design? < /p>\n
The term “Privacy by Design” means “data protection through techno logy design.” “Privacy by Design” along with “Privacy by Default” are one of the key changes that were brought into the General Data Protection Regu lation (GDPR) that went into effect in Europe in May 2018.
\n“Privac y by Design” and “Privacy by Default” have been frequently discussed topic s related to data protection. The first thoughts of “Privacy by Design” we re expressed in the 1970s and were incorporated in the 1990s into the RL 9 5/46/EC data protection directive. According to recital 46 in this Directi ve\, Technical and Organizational Measures (TOM) must be taken already at the time of planning a processing system to protect data safety.
\n< strong>Startups and New Product Introductions: MVP vs. Privacy / Security< /strong>
\nAs entrepreneurs we tend to think in terms of Minimally V iable Product or MVP when we first launch a product or app\, and typically instantiating privacy or security at that point is thought to take up too much time or investment and risk “holding us back” in a competitive space . Yet that leaves a window of vulnerability. When should we consider desig ning in privacy and security? Is there “right” timing?
\nFor that an swer and more\, join us Wednesday\, January 15.

\nIn 2012\, Hector retired from professional gaming and took advantage of h is experience and vision for what esports was becoming\, to launch his fir st company\, FlipSid3 Tactics.? FlipSid3 Tactics (FT) is a professional es ports organization with currently over 20 Championships Titles across 4 di visions.?? Besides being Founder and CEO\, Hector began coaching his young players across these divisions as well as produced some of the first prof essional gaming events in the US\, Brazil and India.
\nOver the foll owing three years\, as the esports industry experienced exponential growth and the competition for solid players for teams skyrocketed. Hector recog nized the need for tools and programs that could gather data and stats and provide analytics to help recruit those top players to his team.? This le d to the launch of his second company\, Stats Helix\, which today is a tec h company using data to enhance player performances and subsequent gaming experiences.? Today Stats Helix is the go to for most major esports events as well as is the data and analytics platform used by Twitch\, the stream ing channel exclusive to the esports industry.
\nHaving changed the esports industry with his “moneyball” approach to player development and h aving created the interactivity for digital broadcasting\, Hector is movin g on to his next venture\, Ascent Sports.? Ascent Sports is positioned to be the industry standard for stats and analytics\, digital streaming enhan cements and game data expertise.? While the big data companies have game d ata\, they do not have the expertise on how to customize and use the data to improve player performance\, the player and viewer experience and impro ve and optimize game development.
